Biden Admin Blows Three-Quarters of Billion on Migrant Settlement in NC

President Biden’s administration has quietly funneled around $750 million into settling thousands of migrants in North Carolina since 2021, showing where their priorities really lie. While plenty of Americans in the state struggle with jobs, housing, and education, it seems the White House has decided to focus on welcoming and supporting new arrivals instead. And this continues even after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the state, killing hundreds and leaving communities in ruins near Asheville. But don’t worry, hurricane victims can apply for a speedy $750 loan to patch things up. Quite the deal, right?

One sharp-eyed researcher over at RandoLand.us has been tracking this migration spending spree. The largest of these projects is a staggering $536 million for an 800-bed refugee reception center in Greensboro, funded by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services. You’d think that agency would be busy helping American families and children, but apparently, they’re too tied up ensuring newcomers get settled in style.

In addition to that monster project, over $221 million in grants have been handed out to help refugees across the state. These grants went to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and a mix of non-profits, both religious and secular. From there, over 200 subgrants flowed to local governments, with these funds going toward everything from furnished apartments and legal services to food and health care. Essentially, these non-profit grantees are setting up a welcome wagon to get these migrants fully integrated into welfare programs and the healthcare system, all while North Carolinians continue to wait for relief.

To put this in perspective, just in 2024 alone, these programs have helped settle 3,462 migrants into North Carolina. This includes 413 people from Venezuela, 574 from the Congo, 302 from Burma, and 317 from Afghanistan. These folks are going to need costly education, training, and support to prevent them from falling into poverty, all at a time when many American families in the state are already struggling to make ends meet.

And the spending doesn’t stop there. The folks at RandoLand say this only covers the refugee programs, not the countless other categories of migrants that Biden’s team is welcoming. According to the website’s operator, the Department of Health and Human Services alone has spent around $30 billion on migration-related efforts since 2021, with another $10 billion coming from the Department of State. And that’s just scratching the surface. The Department of Homeland Security, along with FEMA, spent at least $700 million in 2024 alone to move, house, and feed even more migrants.

Of course, these figures don’t even include the extra goodies migrants get, like tax breaks, government-backed loans, and the elite philanthropy that often ends up in their pockets. Nor does it account for the aid migrants receive through welfare programs like SNAP or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Meanwhile, everyday Americans continue to foot the bill, watching as billions are funneled into supporting migrants while their own communities are left behind.
