Sources: ISIS Jihadist Driver in Bourbon Street Attack

New Orleans was rocked by a horrifying act of violence on New Year’s Day when a driver used a pickup truck to plow through a crowd of revelers, leaving at least ten dead and dozens injured. Police identified the driver as a 42-year-old Texas man named Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Following the initial impact, Jabbar reportedly jumped out of the truck and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. The shootout was brief, ending with Jabbar dead at the scene. Authorities have since confirmed that 35 injured victims were taken to various hospitals, highlighting the widespread devastation caused by the attack.

Reports have emerged suggesting a potential terrorist connection, as an ISIS flag was allegedly discovered inside the vehicle. Additionally, weapons and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED) were found in the truck, with other possible explosive devices located in the French Quarter. Law enforcement has not ruled out the involvement of accomplices, with up to five individuals reportedly being sought in connection to the incident. The FBI is treating the event as a terrorist attack, investigating Jabbar’s affiliations and the origins of the vehicle he used in the assault.

Two officers were injured in the chaos but are thankfully in stable condition. Authorities have not clarified whether their injuries resulted from the vehicle strike or the subsequent gunfire exchange. The incident has left the city reeling, turning a night of celebration into one of mourning and fear. The French Quarter, usually bustling with life and joy, became the scene of an unspeakable tragedy that now underscores growing concerns over domestic and international terror threats.

President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time addressing the attack, offering strong words of support for the victims and law enforcement. Trump reiterated his stance on the urgent need for tougher policies, claiming that his critics, particularly Democrats and the media, have ignored the growing danger of unchecked crime and terrorism. In his statement, Trump promised federal support for New Orleans during the investigation and vowed that his administration would prioritize restoring safety and security.

Attorney General Merrick Garland also confirmed the FBI’s active role in probing the incident as a potential act of terrorism. The discovery of the ISIS flag and explosives has added weight to the ongoing investigation, leaving many to question how such a devastating event could occur. For a nation grappling with rising threats, this tragic New Year’s attack serves as a grim reminder of the challenges ahead in combating both domestic and international terrorism.
