So, here we go again—another day, another arrest of someone who shouldn’t even be in this country, plotting violence on behalf of ISIS. This time, it’s an Afghan national living in Oklahoma who had big plans to carry out a terrorist attack on Election Day. Because what better way to contribute to American democracy than conspiring to kill people at the polls? Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, thought he could bring his ISIS-fueled plans to life right here on U.S. soil. Turns out, he’s not as smart as he thought, and now he’s sitting in a federal courtroom instead.
Tawhedi wasn’t messing around either—he was gathering guns, ammo, and all the trimmings for his big Election Day plot. According to court docs, he even had a juvenile co-conspirator ready to die as a “martyr” with him. Sounds like a lovely pair. Thankfully, they didn’t get very far. After meeting up with some undercover FBI agents and confidential sources in rural Oklahoma to buy the goods, they were busted. Attorney General Merrick Garland, of course, chimed in with the usual “we’re fighting the ISIS threat” talk. It’s nice to hear, but maybe we could start by not letting guys like Tawhedi into the country in the first place?
Here’s where it gets worse—Tawhedi wasn’t just casually plotting in his spare time. He was looking up ISIS propaganda online and making Google searches like “How to access Washington DC cameras” and “Which U.S. states have passed permitless carry gun laws?” You know, light reading for someone planning to unleash chaos. In the weeks leading up to the arrest, Tawhedi was also selling off his family’s assets and preparing to ship his loved ones back to Afghanistan. Classic exit strategy for someone who thinks they’re going out in a blaze of glory.
Naturally, President Biden had to weigh in on this, telling reporters that he’s confident the election will be “free and fair,” but, get this, not so sure it’ll be “peaceful.” No kidding, Joe. When you’ve got guys like Tawhedi plotting terrorist attacks and two assassination attempts on Trump in the rearview mirror, peace seems like a long shot. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign didn’t waste any time pointing the finger at the Biden administration’s immigration policies, calling out Harris for rolling out the “red carpet for terrorists like Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi.” The Harris camp, predictably, had nothing to say in response.
And where did Tawhedi come from, you ask? Well, he entered the U.S. on a special immigrant visa in 2021, right after the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt was quick to point out that the local, state, and federal law enforcement coordination helped foil this attack. It’s one small victory, but the fact that this guy was even in a position to plot such an attack is a glaring reminder that our immigration and vetting processes need some serious work. America can’t afford to keep letting in wolves dressed as sheep.
