The Harris campaign seems to be in full flip-flop mode, desperately scrambling to backtrack on key issues. Tuesday brought us another about-face, this time on electric vehicles (EVs), adding to the growing list of policy reversals. Earlier in the day, Kamala Harris made headlines by suddenly claiming support for the border wall—a stance that contradicts her long-standing opposition. But the backpedaling didn’t stop there.
The Trump War Room highlighted an email from Ammar Moussa, a Harris-Walz campaign official, that contained an eyebrow-raising claim. The email, sent on official Harris-Walz letterhead, not only took a shot at Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) for his speech in Michigan but also tried to sneak in a dubious “fact” that seems at odds with the vice president’s previous positions. “Vice President Kamala Harris does not support an electric vehicle mandate,” Moussa asserted.
This claim sparked immediate reactions. The Trump War Room pointed out the curious timing of this policy reversal, and Greg Price called it “a policy walk back for the ages.” It’s especially puzzling given that the Biden-Harris administration has been aggressively pushing a mandate to convert over half of gas-powered cars to electric by 2030, a plan they announced with much fanfare last April. The proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulation would force manufacturers to meet strict emissions limits, with penalties for those who fail to comply.
Under this proposal, at least 54 percent of new vehicles sold by 2030 would need to be electric, with the figure potentially rising to 67 percent by 2032. This mandate is even more stringent than the 50-percent EV target agreed upon by the auto industry in 2021. Yet, despite these ambitious goals, the administration has faced significant backlash due to the unpopularity of such a mandate and the glaring failures in rolling out the necessary EV infrastructure.
The administration’s plan to spend $7.5 billion on building 500,000 new EV charging stations by 2030 has been nothing short of a disaster. As of May, the Federal Highway Administration admitted that only seven new stations had been built. This hasn’t stopped President Joe Biden from boasting about the progress, despite the glaring disconnect from reality.
What makes this flip-flop even more laughable is Harris’ own history. As a U.S. Senator representing California, she cosponsored the Zero-Emissions Vehicle Act of 2019, which would have required car manufacturers to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2040. And let’s not forget her enthusiastic support for the Green New Deal during her 2020 presidential campaign.
Harris’s sudden reversals are making waves across social media, with both her border wall and EV policy flip-flops trending on X. This isn’t the first time she’s borrowed from Trump and Vance’s playbook either, previously adopting positions on tax breaks for tips and child tax credits. However, when it comes to her own policy ideas, they often veer into far-left territory, drawing sharp criticism for their socialist leanings—especially her proposals for price controls.
As the Harris campaign continues to stumble through these policy shifts, it’s becoming increasingly clear that they’re willing to say anything to stay afloat, even if it means contradicting everything they’ve stood for in the past.
