Race to Gain Control of the US House Is Down the Wire

As the scramble for a House majority continues, Republicans appear to be inching closer to reclaiming the gavel. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas confidently predicted a GOP-controlled House during a recent appearance on Fox News, citing a strong position in several key districts where votes are still trickling in. With Republicans holding 212 seats and Democrats at 200 as of Saturday, the GOP is just six seats shy of the 218 needed to secure the majority. Democrats, meanwhile, face an increasingly narrow path, as they’d have to pull off victories in nearly every undecided contest to keep control.

The remaining uncalled races are spread across a mix of western states and critical swing districts, spanning from California to Alaska. Alaska’s at-large congressional district has attracted particular attention, where Republican challenger Nick Begich is giving Democratic incumbent Mary Sattler Peltola a serious run for her seat. Begich currently leads with 49.49% to Peltola’s 45.42%, with about 76.5% of the vote counted. This race is shaping up as one of several key opportunities for a GOP flip.

In Arizona’s 6th District, the numbers are just as tight. First-term Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani holds a slim lead over former Democratic state lawmaker Kirsten Engel, with Ciscomani up by a mere 1,795 votes and about 75.64% of ballots counted. California’s 13th District also remains in play, where Republican John Duarte leads Democrat Adam Gray by a small but steady margin. Duarte’s 52% edge, compared to Gray’s 48.75%, reflects the broader trend of close races where Republicans are holding slight advantages as counting progresses.

Over in Colorado’s 8th District, Republican Gabe Evans is ahead of Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo. Should Evans maintain his lead, it would represent another strategic flip for Republicans in their quest for a House majority. With 86% of the vote counted in that district, the GOP is eyeing a potential power shift that could help cement their majority.

As it stands, Republicans are cautiously optimistic, watching these tight races in key battleground states and waiting for final counts. While Democrats hold on to a slim hope of a last-minute surge, the GOP seems well-positioned to reclaim the House, leaving Democrats facing an uphill battle to hold onto power.
