Soros Group Doubles Down on Election Censorship

A group funded by George Soros, with a clear obsession for censorship, is stepping up its interference ahead of the 2024 election, and they’re not exactly hiding it. Free Press, which has received at least $2 million from Soros between 2017 and 2021, is launching a new initiative called “Democracy Is…”, and don’t let the name fool you—this is all about roping journalists into the leftist agenda and training the public on how to “flag disinformation” on social media. Of course, their definition of disinformation just so happens to be anything that counters the progressive narrative.

In their press release, Free Press boasts that they’ll be “equipping journalists” and “influencing tech platforms” to better serve communities—translation: make sure Big Tech keeps silencing conservative viewpoints. The initiative’s website highlights the dangers of misinformation, which is their go-to term for any opinion that dares to challenge left-wing orthodoxy. This is clearly part of Soros’ larger strategy to manipulate the flow of information in an election year.

Free Press isn’t working alone either. They’ve gathered a bunch of other Soros-backed groups like the Center for Countering Digital Hate, which exists to bully Big Tech into censoring conservative voices on topics like climate change and COVID-19. Add groups like People for the American Way and United We Dream—Soros-financed organizations that have raked in more than $12 million combined—and it’s clear who’s behind this push. These are the same organizations that tried to sink Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter by pressuring advertisers to abandon the platform.

Dan Schneider from MRC Free Speech America didn’t hold back in his critique, pointing out that what Free Press calls “saving democracy” is actually a blatant effort to silence anyone with opposing political views. He hit the nail on the head. When they say they’re protecting democracy, what they really mean is shutting down anyone who doesn’t follow their progressive playbook. Censoring political opposition is about as undemocratic as it gets, but that’s clearly their strategy as 2024 approaches.

The irony is that Free Press is complaining about Big Tech pulling back on its censorship efforts since the 2020 election. In their view, letting people speak their minds without the tech industry acting as speech police is somehow a threat to democracy. They’re still clinging to the old narrative that election disinformation in 2020 unfairly targeted minorities and women, as if the solution is to silence more people.

The demands they’ve laid out for Big Tech read like a wish list for authoritarianism. They want social media platforms to expand content moderation teams and even limit how widely posts can spread—essentially ensuring that content they don’t like never sees the light of day. It’s disturbing to see them openly call for Big Tech to throttle election-related content before it’s even reviewed. This isn’t about protecting democracy; it’s about controlling it by silencing dissenting voices.
